The action participants chanted the slogans “Freedom!”, “Independence!”, “Striving for independence is not a crime.” According to local police, about 200 thousand people took part in the march. The march was attended by the Chairman of the Government of Catalonia, Kim Torr, and the Chairman of the Catalan Parliament, Roger Torrent. On October 1, 2017, in a referendum organized by the Catalan authorities, the separation of the region from Spain was supported by 90.18% of the plebiscite participants. The turnout was 43%. During clashes with law enforcement forces that blocked part of the polling stations, 893 people were injured. October 27, the Parliament of Catalonia adopted a resolution that declares independence from Spain. On October 28, the Spanish Cabinet of Ministers temporarily assumed responsibility for managing the region, depriving the government of Catalonia and its head, Carles Puchdemon, from office. On November 2, the Spanish National Court decided to detain members of the suspended government of Catalonia. They were accused of attempting a coup d'état.
