US authorities intend to strengthen the supervision of Confucius institutions in the country

The State Department and the US Department of Education intend to tighten control over the activities of Confucius institutions that are suspected of spreading Chinese influence and propaganda. This was reported by Reuters.

According to preliminary data, the oversight of the issuance of visas to staff of institutions, as well as funding from foreign governments, will be strengthened. At the same time, the Chinese Embassy in Washington issued a statement by the country's Foreign Ministry that the activities of the institutions are absolutely legal, transparent and open.

Currently, there are about 100 Confucius institutes in colleges and universities and about 500 Confucius classes in the United States. This is a network of Chinese cultural and educational centers that were established by the State Committee for the Promotion of Chinese Language Abroad of the Ministry of Education of China.
